Joseph Scalice specializes in the political history of the Philippines in the twentieth century. He wrote his doctoral dissertation on the history of the Communist Parties of the Philippines and the declaration of martial law by Ferdinand Marcos in 1972.

Research Interests

I have spent the majority of my life in the Philippines, and I bring to my scholarship a lived fluency in the language and culture of Island Southeast Asia. I am particularly interested in the history of lower class movements throughout the region and their artistic and literary expressions and representations.
